I have a bit of a creative side that comes out every now and then. I like crafts. I like writing. I like photography. I recently got an idea from everyone’s favorite inspirational place, Pinterest, to add some quotes on a canvas. I figured I could do this on my own so I headed to the craft store, bought a couple of canvases, some paint and new paint brushes and got to work. I dug through very old journals in search for some of my favorite quotes. When I was younger, I’d scribble some of my favorite inspirational sayings on the first two pages of a journal. Now that I’m older, I still keep a journal but with a bit of a different purpose. Every now and then when I come across a saying that inspires me, I scribble it down for a day that I might need it. I figured posting some of my favorite on a wall, where I can see them daily, surrounded by some of my favorite landscape black and white photos – which are already hanging on my wall, would be the best inspiration I could ask for on days I need a little pick me up or reminder on why it is what I like to do.
Right now I’ve only finished one canvas. The other has the background painted but I haven’t narrowed down my next quote. Here are some on writing that I found in a journal I kept back in 2006. I was at a different place in life then, but these wise words still resonate with me. Hope they inspire some of you as much as they do me.
“You don’t write because you want to say something. You write because you’ve got something to say.” ~my favorite author, F. Scott Fitzgerald
“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” ~Sylvia Plath, the most gutsy writer I’ve ever read about
“It is impossible to discourage real writers – they don’t give a damn what you say, they’re going to write.” ~Sinclair Lewis
“If I don’t write to empty my mind, I go mad.” ~Lord Byron
“Writers are not just people who sit down and write. They hazard themselves. Every time you compose a book your composition of yourself is at stake.” ~E. L. Doctor Ow
“Writing is an occupation in which you have to keep proving your talent to those who have none.” ~Jules Renard
“Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.“ ~William Wordsworth
And my all time favorite quote by Henry David Thoreau is the most gorgeous quote and I have it on bookmakers, for back when I read on something other than my NookColor, and I think it’s the perfect piece to add to my wall. It may not look perfect, but it was therapeutic to paint and I’ll remember the process every time I see it hanging on the wall.
“Go Confidently in the direction of your dreams!” ~Henry David Thoreau
What do you do to let your creativity show? What’s your creative outlet? Have a favorite quote- share it in the comments section. Want to share your feelings or thoughts on writing and the writing process, do that in the comments section too. I’m sure there are many other creative folks out there who could use a bit of inspiration today or lift me up.
