Today’s Fashionably Fab Female is one who has a huge following and the first to be featured on Bella Vida Style who isn’t a local from Miami. I first stumbled upon Dana Weiss of Possessionista through her hilarious tweets during The Bachelor or Bachelorette seasons. Which, to be honest is also when I’m the most active on Twitter because the constant back and forth mockery of the dates, contestants, etc makes the watching process that more entertaining.
Weiss is as obsessed with TV as I am and probably the only other person I can think of who watches as much Fall (or any time) TV as I do. However, she doesn’t just watch TV, she helps you find those cute trends the characters on your favorite Prime Time TV show are wearing. She’s not only a TV junkie, but a fashion lover to the core. If you’re searching for a new style inspiration, I recommend checking out Possessionista’s blog. If you’re in the mood from some hilarious tweets that feel like you’re watching your favorite show with your best friend, definitely follow her on Twitter. And if you want to know how a regular gal juggles mommy hood, a blog, carpool and yet manages to score projects with powerhouses like InStyle, US Weekly, ABC, and People magazine read the Q&A below. Weiss shares everything from how she gets her inspiration, what got her started, how to monetize a blog and even some personal titbits like what’s on her nightstand and her favorite hobbies, blogs and even latest reads.
It was really an accident.I just started keeping track of stuff I loved on the internet and randomly people started finding it.
BVS: Why did you get into blogging?
I was bored. I had a new baby, a husband working crazy hours I’ve always been creative and it was just an easy, nighttime outlet for me.
BVS: What pays your bills (what’s your “real” job)?
My husband. That sounds terrible. I’m a stay at home mom.
BVS: Other than your blog, and maybe your day job, what else are you involved in?
My kids. I volunteer. I do some personal shopping. I watch a lot of Tv.
BVS: Why do you blog?
I think as moms, we sometimes have to be third. We’re a wife. We’re a mom. This was something that was all about me. It was Dana the blogger. Not Dana the wife. Or Dana the mom.
BVS: One gadget you couldn’t live without?
Oh God, my iPhone. I hate that it’s like an appendage.
BVS: Best app?
Twitter. I love how it brings you into the conversation
BVS: What inspires you?
Color. Creativity. Smart people.
BVS: What do you do when you get writer’s block?
Shower. Or work out. Sometimes I just need to unplug.
BVS: How do you come up with new and refreshing content?
I’m fortunate in that every day there’s a new show, so there’s always something new to discover.
BVS: How would you describe your blog in 2 sentences or less?
The best fashion from the best (and worst) TV
BVS: What’s the best way to get more followers and/or get your blog exposure?
Be authentic. Do what no one else is doing.
BVS: How can someone starting out figure out how to separate themselves from the rest of the blogs out there?
I think you have to answer the question, “what do I want that no one else is doing?” for me it wasn’t just what label someone was wearing, but also the whole discussion about what’s on TV. I want to be the person sitting on your couch next to you, watching TV and playing armchair fashion police.
BVS: Some people thing blogging makes you rich – what’s the truth?
Hard work makes you rich. Any blogger making money isn’t phoning it in.
What’s the best way to monetize your blog?
Content first. Monetize second. Any reader knows the difference between good content and advertorial.
BVS: How can you successfully profit from your blog?
I think everyone is different but for me I write everything without thinking of the money. Then I go back and figure out what are ways I can make money from this post without losing the integrity of the blog. Sometimes that means an entire post goes un-monetized because nothing I’m writing about has an affiliate link. It’s okay. Part of making money is reader loyalty.
BVS: Best advertising approach?
I don’t know. Honestly? I’m not an expert, so I have an agency do my advertising reach for me. It lets me focus on the editorial.
BVS: How can a blogger better work with brands?
Don’t just ask, “what can you do for me.” ask “what can I do for you?”
BVS: If you had to pic the best 3 devices for bloggers what would they be?
Spell check. A computer. A moral compass.
BVS: What blog or person do you consider your example to push for better content or your mentor?
Emily Schumann at Cupcakes and Cashmere. She’s a class act all the way around.
BVS: Many times I get told that a blog is a public diary, others think it’s a waste of time or just a hobby – Why do you find blogging important or of value?
Why is blogging a priority for YOU? For me, I started Possessionsta because I needed a specific kind of information – TV fashion – and it wasn’t out there. So I filled that hole. I guess, find what’s missing in the world and put it out there.
BVS: Current town?
BVS: What do you love best about your city?
It’s Chicago. So, you know, everything.
BVS: City hidden treasure?
The people. What they say about Midwesterners is true.
BVS: What music plays in the background as you write (if any)?
It’s always the TV. Thank God for the CW and it’s brilliant soundtracks.
BVS: What is on your nightstand?
My kindle. My glasses. A clock radio.
BVS: What’s your vice?
BVS: What are you reading right now? Any good?
I go through books like water. By the time you publish this I’ll be onto something new. I loved the new Jonathan Tropper book. And Breed just totally freaked me out.
BVS: Other than blogging – what hobbies do you have?
Driving carpool. Does that count?
BVS: What is stylish to you?
Being an original. Surrounding yourself with people who love you.
BVS: Favorite blog to follow?
You mean besides Possessionista?
BVS: Favorite shopping site?
BVS: Can’t live without beauty or makeup product?
BVS: If you have $100 right now what would you spend it on?
The Madewell 25% sale. It’s getting so cold, so I’m stocking up on sweaters.
BVS: Blog website?
BVS: Blog’s Facebook?
BVS: Twitter handle?
BVS: What’s next for you?
I’m having fun contributing to InStyle, UsWeekly and People Magazine. I just did some video with TV Guide and shooting my next batch of video for LookTV. I hope to be back in LA for another round of ABC’s Bachelor After Party on ABC.com. Plus a few surprises I can’t spill about just yet.
